Campus Bulletin Distinction for Director Rudolf-Werner Dreier, head of public relations at the University of Freiburg and managing director of the booster association Alumni Freiburg e.V., has been named “Research Press Officer of the Year 2012” in the category “Research Institutes and Universities.” “The distinction shows that our small team has succeeded in communicating the achievements of our university’s researchers in technically precise yet at the same time absorbing and clear language,” says Dreier. The research press officers of the year are selected in a survey of around 700 journalists in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland conducted by the trade publication Medizin&Wissenschaftsjournalist. » www.pr.uni-freiburg.de Rudolf-Werner Dreier is “Research Press Officer of the Year 2012.” Photo: Schilling University College Freiburg Established A laboratory for instruction: The University of Freiburg has established the Uni- versity College Freiburg (UCF). It develops research- and problem-based teaching strategies and organizes interdisciplinary degree programs. The core component of the new institution is the bachelor’s program Liberal Arts and Sciences, the University of Freiburg’s first interdisciplinary undergraduate degree program taught entirely in the English language. It was launched in winter semester 2012/13 along with the Interdis- ciplinary Track Program (IndiTrack), which gives students of bachelor’s programs the chance to extend their studies by a year to take courses of their choice from the entire spectrum of fields offered at the University of Freiburg. In addition, the UCF will offer the module “Fascination Science” from 2013 on. It gives undergraduates in their second to fourth semester of study the opportunity to develop and present outlines for research projects in small groups. » www.ucf.uni-freiburg.de Nicholas Eschenbruch (left), director of education at the University College Freiburg, welcomes beginning students of the new degree program Liberal Arts and Sciences. What do the collegiate buildings in the city center have to say about the history of the University of Freiburg? What literary figures have lived in Freiburg? The answers can now be found on the University of Freiburg website: Descriptions, photos, and maps of all five “Freiburg Knowledge Hikes” are now available online, inviting all interested hikers to discover them on their own. Examples include excursions to nearby Schönberg, up to the summit of Kandel, and through the Freiburg city center. Organized jointly by the Public Relations Department and the Studium Generale Program, the Knowledge Hikes provide insight into the world of literature, history, geography, and geobotany through guided tours led by researchers. » www.pr.uni-freiburg.de/service/wissenswanderungen 26
