University News uni'alumni 2016 University News uni'alumni 2016 Museum work encompasses every- thing from object storage to media- based education and fundraising. The University of Freiburg’s Freiburg Acad- emy of Museum, Exhibition, and Collec- tion Studies (FRAMAS) has therefore designed a new continuing education program for aspiring museum workers: museOn. “Our goal is to consider from an academic perspective a field that is currently shaped by practice,” says Dr. Christian Wacker, academic director of the program. “We want to achieve a professionalization in museum and col- lection management in the long term.” The program is designed for people already working in the field: It combines self-learning phases with online mate- rial and compact classroom teaching phases according to the principle of blended learning. Moreover, the students can choose from various modules de- pending on their individual needs. The test phase, during which it will be pos- sible to try out the first modules free of charge, is set to begin in the spring of 2016. By 2018, the academy plans to offer around 40 courses that can be combined to earn various certificates depending on the amount of work involved – from a certificate of partici- pation to a diploma of advanced studies. In addition to the training itself, the program will focus on networking, both with teachers and with cooperation part- ners in the region and further afield. It documents the findings and activities of Prof. Dr. Gernot Segelbacher, professor of wildlife ecology and wildlife management at the Univer- sity of Freiburg, and his wildlife manage- ment research group. Segelbacher has been posting on the site regularly since mid 2014. The entries explain topics related to biodiversity in understandable language – including both genetic diver- sity within a species and the diversity of species and ecosystems. Collecting and Examining Feathers “We focus primarily on the genetic di- versity within a species and study the population, amount, origin, and movement patterns of individual animal species,” says Segelbacher. For example, he and his team have studied how various gold- en eagle populations in Europe are relat- ed. The researchers collected feathers from aeries and museums and decoded their genetic traits. “Interestingly, we succeeded in identifying two main genetic lines: One of them runs through the Mediterranean and the Alps, the other from Scotland over the Scan- dinavian peninsula all the way to Russia and North America.” These lines can be traced back to the resettling of Central Europe by golden eagles from two different areas of origin after the last ice age.
